The volunteers have done a remarkable job, but what is even more remarkable is thinking about the officers’ families and some of the inmates who created it to begin with.

In fact, there was one inmate, Elliot Michener, who became a dedicated gardener and even worked in the warden’s home garden areas, because of his having been assigned to help tend for the gardens. The leeward side of the island is the warmest. But they never get even frost in the Bay area!
